Emergency Medicine Trauma Tutorial
The Emergency Medicine Trauma Tutorial is a structured program designed to introduce the student to the management of seriously injured patients in a busy Level I trauma center. This interdisciplinary elective will combine an exposure to trauma resuscitation in the Emergency department and operative care and inpatient follow-up on the surgical trauma and orthopedic services.
The medical student will assist in the Emergency Department care of seriously injured patients, and will have an opportunity to follow cases requiring emergency surgery directly to the operating room. To gain an appreciation of the inpatient care of trauma patients, the students will also maintain a log of their cases, and track them throughout their hospital course. These cases will serve as source material for case-based teaching in a weekly Trauma tutorial. The tutorial will be designed specifically for this elective, and will be led by senior members of the Emergency Medicine faculty. It will consist of a series of didactic lectures and case-based teaching sessions covering the fundamentals of trauma resuscitation. Students on the Trauma Tutorial Elective will also attend the biweekly EM / Surgery trauma conference, the weekly four hour EM lecture series, and the weekly follow-up rounds. The trauma experience will be complemented by a half-day observational session in the Jacobi Hyperbaric Chamber, and a field trip to the Reptile House at the Bronx Zoo, Jacobi's partner in the regional snake bite center. Jacobi is ideally suited as a trauma training site, as it was the first trauma center in New York City, and is the busiest trauma in New York City. Two students will be accepted per session. Students interested should call 718-918-5820 for further information.
